Road test

Driving the all new SsangYong Musso pickup range in the Cotswolds left drivers mightily impressed with its capabilities. The range comprises of the entry level EX, the Rebel, the Saracen and the special edition Rhino. All feature a new exterior and interior taking design cues from the Rexton SUV. First impressions are that the new Musso is finished to a high level, both inside and out with an impressive level of standard specification available on all models. A class leading 7-year / 150,000 mile warranty supports SsangYong’s belief in this product.

The entry level EX is available for under £20k plus VAT and comes with air conditioning, 17” alloy wheels, and DAB radio.

The mid-range Rebel gives you a choice of manual or automatic gearbox, with specification upgrades from the EX including cooled and heated seats, 18” alloys, a rear view camera and Apple Carplay. The top of the range Saracen offers front and rear heated seats a larger media screen with Tom-Tom satellite navigation, full leather seats, metal front  kid plate and additional chrome styling features including tubular side steps, rear corner bars, mirror caps and door handles. The numbered limited edition Rhino is based on the Saracen with an even longer specification list and is available for under £30k excluding Vat.

On the move
On road the Musso handles well, is quiet and smooth whilst offering great visibility. The higher specification automatics are the ones to go for. The Musso pickup’s 6 speed automatic gearbox is from Japanese manufacturer Aisin. A gearbox renowned for seamless shifts and the ability to match the  400Nm produced by Musso’s torquey new diesel engine.   The Musso pickup is the only vehicle in its class that can tow 3.5 tonnes and carry more than a 1-tonne payload at the same time. This unique capability on the automatic versions delivers real flexibility for load carrying. The loadbed is the deepest in the sector, but not the longest. However, a longer bed version is due out in 2019. Off-road, the Musso is  particularly sure-footed with high and low ratios available as on and off-road conditions demand and hill descent control delivers confidence building prowess over challenging terrain.

Overall impression

There will be many who are surprised by the way the Musso drives. It is in this area that SsangYong have worked tirelessly on developing the engines, the transmission and suspension to deliver dynamic appeal to new customers. The vehicles are supported by a growing UK dealer network and the excellent 7-year warranty. Even customers of the older Musso can upgrade to the same 7-year warranty for a small fee. The Glass’s Editorial team believe that once buyers look through any badge reservations, the Musso is a capable and versatile pickup. Dave Hill, Commercial Vehicle Editor at Glass’s Information Services says “The new Musso pickup will be absorbed into the used market with ease. With the initial small, but growing volumes, appetite and demand for the Musso in the used market will be positive, with residual values strengthening as the vehicle gets a foothold.”
