SSANGS OF PRAISE
Tax is a touchy subject at present and there's no doubt that the opportunities for creative accounting are ably assisted by a HMRC system as intricate as a Louis Van Gaal tactical dossier. Having said that any businessman who is not actively seeking out the rules that will benefit his bottom line is either very, very foolish or very, very rich — and the foolish don't get rich very often.
From an end users point of view one of the chief benefits of a double cab pick-up is that it is, of course, a dual purpose vehicle — family car and faithful workhorse combined. Where the tax falls in your favour is that if it has those two rows of seats, and a 1 tonne or over payload into the bargain, then the VAT is reclaimable as a commercial vehicle. Not only that but it's also treated as a van for benefit in kind purposes.
The load carrying capacity of the SsangYong Korando Sports has actually been increased to 1,050kg, which exceeds that magic figure, but it's the ride quality that still marks it out from some of its rivals. The multi-link rear suspension set up that you would normally find on passenger cars is still there, and the Korando remains the only pick up on the market to offer this system. Added to that are enhanced rear coil springs, which means the load deck can take over one tonne of weight. What that leaves you with is the ride quality of a car with the muscle of a genuine commercial vehicle, with the addition of a 5 year limitless mileage warranty for added peace of mind.
A towing capacity of 2.7 tonnes, and a selectable 4 wheel drive system, adds to the versatility, as does the range of models available. The SX comes equipped with 1 6in. alloy wheels, and tinted glass, whilst interior refinements at your fingertips include air conditioning, leather covered steering wheel, remote central locking, Kenwood MP3 CD & RDS radio with a USB & auxiliary port and Bluetooth connectivity, as well as speed sensitive power assisted steering.
Higher up the price range the EX has 18in. alloy wheels, with the added luxury of leather upholstery with heated front seats, powered driver's seat, heated, electrically adjustable and power folding door mirrors and rear parking sensors. 6 speed automatic transmission with cruise control is also available as an option.
Under the bonnet power is derived from SsangYong's latest e-XDi diesel engine, 2 litre Euro 5 unit that provides maximum power of 155PS and peak torque of 360Nm delivered between 1,500rpm and 2,800rpm, whilst still achieving 37.7 mpg on the Combined Cycle.
At the business end the flat rear deck provides 2.04m2 load area and comes complete with load deck liner and anchor points. An optional rigid hard tops provide weather protection and security to the load area and this can be styled and colour matched to complement the rest of the vehicle.

BENEFIT IN KIND
As a commercial vehicle, the Korando Sports 1-tonne pick-up attracts a low level of Benefit in Kind (BIK) taxation.
- If used for unrestricted private use, the 'benefit in kind' liability is currently x your marginal tax rate. A 20% tax payer will pay £600 per year, whilst a 40% tax payer will pay £l,200 per year
- If fuel is provided by an employer for private use, an additional BIK liability of applies. So the tax payable for a 20% tax payer is £110 per year and £220 per year for a 40% tax payer
- Company employees who use their vehicle solely for business purposes have no BIK tax liability whatsoever
